OIST is a unique university in Japan and one of three higher education research institutions worldwide with research funding organized under the “High-Trust Principle,” a complex of guiding principles for the organization of research. High-Trust funding is invaluable to OIST research outcomes by encouraging pioneering research inhibited by traditional, grant-based funding models that often limited in impact because of the innate conservatism and risk aversion of pre-award, peer-review panels.
