About OIST Graduate University:

Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (the “OIST”) was established on 1 September 2005 by the Japanese government pursuant to the Independent Administrative Institution Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Promotion Corporation Act. With independent governance from the Private Schools Act and public funding under the sponsorship of the Cabinet Office, OIST is a private university offering a 5-year PhD program in science.
OIST is a unique university in Japan and one of three higher education research institutions worldwide with research funding organized under the “High-Trust Principle,” a complex of guiding principles for the organization of research. High-Trust funding is invaluable to OIST research outcomes by encouraging pioneering research inhibited by traditional, grant-based funding models that often limited in impact because of the innate conservatism and risk aversion of pre-award, peer-review panels.

Prospective Role:

OIST Graduate University and The Renewable Nations Institute are currently planning cooperation on research initiatives and clean energy technology commercialization strategies that are consistent with the objectives of proposed Center for U.S.-Japan Cooperation on Energy and Climate. Research and commercialization opportunities may include, but not be limited to, the current activities of existing and planned OIST research units.

The OIST
Graduate University and the Institute are collaborating under a Letter of Interest from the OIST Foundation and OIST Graduate University.
